Peridot
Peridot is a green gemstone and is the national gem of Egypt. Mined by ancient Egyptians on the island of Zabargad, the island’s inhabitants named it gem of the sun due to its radiance and its striking shades of yellow. It subsequently became known as Peridot, which is derived from the Arabic word faridat meaning gem. Interestingly, jewelry historians are convinced that the Emeralds that Cleopatra was renowned for wearing were not actually Emeralds at all but were in fact deep-green Peridots.
Today, this attractive gem is found in quite a few locations worldwide, China, America, Africa, and Australia to mention but a few. Although it is one of the few gemstones that comes in only one color, its green tone-palette is vast. From the deeply saturated dark greens of the Burma and Pakistan gems, to the sparky greens of the Spitsbergen Norwegian finds, through to the spring-like and enchanting light greens of Afghanistan’s mint Peridots.
