Tanzanite

Tanzanite is an extraordinary gemstone. The most coveted color found is a blue surrounded by delicate hints of purple and it is this combination that gives it its wonderfully interesting appearance. It is named after the East African state of Tanzania, the only place in the world where it has been found. On its discovery in 1967, specialists enthusiastically celebrated it as the gemstone of the 20th century. They held their breath in excitement as they caught sight of the first deep-blue crystals, which had been found in the Merelani Hills near Arusha in the north of Tanzania.

Tanzanite is a fantastic stone with its extensive range of blues and purples through to light watercolor violets. Interestingly, when these stones are mined, 80% of Tanzanites display brownish coloring and to bring out and obtain the desired special colors, these gems are often heated.

Tanzanite has a well-developed polychromatic characteristic, which means, depending on the angle from which the stone is viewed, it may appear blue, purple or violet. It is these shades of purple that give the Tanzanite a more uplifting feel.
